Is Manifest Based On A True Story?
A new season of Manifest has finally arrived on Netflix, and fans are quickly diving into the first new batch of episodes οn their screens.
Many of the fans of the Manifest series wonder if any of this contains a trace of true history. None of this is a true story but a pure work of fiction from the mind of creator Jeff Rake. That being said, it turns out that a true event helped the idea take off!
Manifest is not based on a true story per se, but is somehow connected to the unexplained disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, which confused millions of people when the story broke in March 2014. En route to China from a Malaysian airport, the plane disappeared and surprisingly was never found. There were over 200 people on the plane and none of them were ever found. Multiple governments cooperated in search and rescue efforts, but nothing ever came of them. Some pieces of possible debris have since been found, but the true fate of Manifest’s inspiration, Flight 370, remains an ongoing mystery, although researchers have their theories about what might have happened.
Series creator and showrunner Jeff Rake acknowledged in an interview on SYFY’s official YouTube channel that Flight 370 plays a “pivotal role” in the show, even if he had the original idea for Manifest before it actually happened. Rake says he came up with the idea during a family trip to the Grand Canyon while thinking about “togetherness” and “separation.” He tried to pitch the idea to different networks, but to no avail. However, when the Malaysian Airlines flight disappeared, the idea seemed “a little more real” to him. Rake claims that “within Malaysian Air”, people began to develop an interest in bringing the complex timelines and mysteries of the Manifest to life.
The many mysteries presented in Manifest are all pure fiction, but the way the plane’s disappearance hooked the audience into the show may well have been inspired by real life.
However, it is important to emphasize that the Manifest was not based on what happened on Flight 370.
